HELPING NEEDS OUTREACH

The Helping Needs Outreach was organized in December, 2005.  We include members from diverse age groups including children, youth, young adults, and senior adults, both men and women.

Our program is based on the mentoring theory found in Titus, Chapter 2.  We believe that more accomplished adults should be teaching and mentoring those less capable.  In doing so, we are also fulfilling our two-fold, God-called mission work:  mentoring our young adults and youth all the while meeting the needs in our community.

Our seniors are using their life experiences to influence others.  We are opening doors for mission work by offering opportunities to serve others in ways which are compatible with work and school schedules.  This enables our young adults and youth to share their talents in helping others.

Each member of our organization is a Joy Traveler.  Joy Travelers minister to the elderly, visit the hospital and nursing homes, and visit the homes of the shut-ins.  We have made countless visits in these areas this year.  Additionally, we helped the shut-ins with meals, chores, and errands.

Our community mission focus this year has included two agencies: Morristown-Hamblen Youth Emergency Shelter (Y.E.S.) and the Morristown Pregnancy Crisis Center.  Our United Methodist mission focus has been Jubilee Project in Sneedville, Tennessee.
Youth Emergency Shelter: On the first Monday of each month, we serve snacks at YES at 7:00 PM.  This is a time for homemade treats and ice cream.  We donate games, puzzles, clothes, and hygiene items to the shelter.  After the snack, we begin a devotion time and play games with the children.
Morristown Pregnancy Crisis Center: This center ministers to young women in the community during pregnancy or pre-natal, through birth and up to the time the infant is two years old.  These young women earn points by taking parenting classes and Bible Study classes provided through the center.  The point may then be used to purchase baby items.  Each month we deliver new and used baby items to the Pregnancy Crisis Center.  Additionally, we have cooked and provided three "Promise Meals" to the center.  Each time we served approximately twenty-five people, including trainers, baby holders, and new mothers.  We are currently compiling a recipe and nutritional diet handbook to distribute at the center.  This will be used in our cooking classes.  We believe a better, healthier diet will produce stronger, healthier babies.  Matt Barnes is currently working on a program for Pregnancy Crisis Center to serve the new fathers.  Other organizations in town will be referring young men to Matt.  What a ministry this will be!  Please keep Matt and that program in your prayers as he undertakes this crucial ministry.
Jubilee Project: This year we had eleven members, including three children and youth, go on a work camp to serve Jubilee Project during August, 2006.
